STOCKLEIGH POMEROY SS 80 SE 10/228 Elston and Lake Cottage - - II

2 adjoining houses, probably originally 1 house. Circa C16/C17 remodelling and extension of earlier house. Rendered and painted cob walls, hipped wheat-reed thatched roof with 2 brick axial stacks defining extent of original house. Probably originally 2 or 3 room cross or through-passage plan, later narrower 1 room extension, left and wider 1 room addition, right, plus C20 lean-to, front, right. 2-storeys with first floor partly in roof space. Irregular 3-window south front. Doorway to far left and within lean-to, both with C20 doors. Original doorway position possibly where third ground floor C20 window is. Left hand house has C20 window, 4-pane, 2-light casement and 12-pane, 2-light casement over in pointed arched opening. Other house has mostly 2 or 3 light small paned casements. 2 first floor windows with eyebrows; other window is C20 eyebrowed roof dormer. Rear, east end projects but first floor walling has less projection like reverse jetty. Interior of Lake Cottage has axial fireplace with bread oven and rough chamfered cross beams with run out stops and exposed joists. Roof trusses of Lake Cottage are clean and have morticed apices and lap-jointed collars. Roof space of Elston not accessible. Elston has deeply chamfered ceiling beam with bar stops.
