2/20 Cascade and grottoes at north end of lake

GV II*

Cascade and associated walls, embankments and tunnel, 1785-7 by Hon. C. Hamilton of Painshill and J. Lane of Tisbury. Cyclopean rockwork in picturesque manner with several outflows over high main outfall, embankment with grotto to south and sunken path to north lined with rockwork, passing under high rustic arch adjacent to cascade and extending back to east past entry to serpentine tunnel that emerges above head of cascade. Rustic stone grotto on south side west of cascade. An outstanding example of picturesque design. (N. Pevsner, Wiltshire, 1975, 122; Country Life, 7.9.1972)
