SW7834SE THE SQUARE 580-1/6/169 (West side) 28/01/49 Nos.1, 2 AND 3 and attached forecourt walls and railings

Terrace of 3 town houses to resemble mansion house. c1770s. Roughly-coursed granite rubble with flat arches; hipped dry slate roof with central triangular pediment with oculus and modillion cornice, brick axial and rear stacks. Double-depth plan. Late Georgian style. 3 storeys over basement; symmetrical 2:3:2-bay front. Central pedimented bays broken forward; original or early C19 sixteen-pane hornless sashes to Nos 1 & 2, copies to No.3; No.2 with central pedimented doorway fluted columns and moulded entablatures with dentils and modillions; others with pilastered doorways; No.1 with consoles; all with 6-panel door and overlights. INTERIOR of No.1 retains some original features including stair with rectangular balusters, others not inspected. SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: forecourt walls with dressed granite plinths; ornate cast-iron railings to 2, otherwise wrought-iron railings.
