5/57 The George Inn
GV II
Inn, mid to later C19 refronting of C18 building, squared rubble stone with ashlar dressings and hipped stone slate roof. Two storeys, L-plan. Ashlar stacks to rear. Symmetrical south front with flush quoins, ashlar plinth, moulded cornice and parapet. Stone mullion windows with hoodmoulds. Five-window range. Projected centre with door in shouldered surround, slightly jettied upper floor with 2-light window. Wings each side have 2 upper 2- lights and ground floor 5-light window. North west rear wing has hipped north end, 2-window range of similar 2-light windows flanking fine early C18 stone doorcase, bolection-moulded with carved keystone and frieze. Ornate acanthus brackets support scrolled pediment over. No interior features of interest. Inn is marked on J. Powell map of 1763.
