Details

SS 81 SE CRUWYS MORCHARD CRUWYS MORCHARD MILL LANE 2/85 Morchard Mill - II House. Circa early/mid C19 ; rear wing probably earlier. Snecked local stone, rear wing partly plastered ; slate roof, gabled at ends ; rear wing partly roofed with slate, partly with corrugated iron ; projecting stone stacks at ends with diagonally- set paired brick shafts. L plan with modest Tudor details. Main range single depth, 2 rooms wide with a central entrance probably facing the stair. A rear left wing may be earlier than the main range and is partly used for service, partly for storage. 2 storeys. Symmetrical 3-bay front with a central gabled porch with ornamental bargeboards, a chamfered rounded outer doorway and a panelled front door to the inner door, 2 first floor gabled dormers with ornamental bargeboards and 2-light casements, 3 panes per light ; similar 3-light ground floor casements. The rear elevation has a first floor Tudor arched stair light with ornamental glazing. The rear wing has casement windows and a first floor left entrance. Interior not inspected but said to contain mill machinery. According to Margaret C.S. Cruwys Morchard Mill is first documented in the C15. Cruwys, Margaret C.S., A Cruwys Morchard Notebook, 1066-1874 (1939).
