House, now offices and walls. c1860. For Sir John Brown. Ashlar with hipped slate roofs with various coped stone stacks. Italianate style. EXTERIOR: plinth, string course, rusticated quoins, sill and eaves bands, dentilled cornice, balustrade with urns. 2 storeys; 10 x 7 windows. Windows are plain sashes, those to ground floor with ornamented cornices. Main west front has a projecting 3-stage square belvedere tower, with balustrade and prominent side wall stack. 3 windows, those to the top stage with a balcony. Ground floor has a small central window flanked to left by a sash and to right by a glazed door, both with fanlights. Between the window heads, a cartouche. To right, 3 windows on each floor, and to left, 4. Beyond, to left, a single storey projection with 2 windows and adjoining it at right angles, a coped screen wall with 3 moulded round-headed arches with keystones. South front has a projecting centre, 3 windows, with a balustraded canted single storey bay window with a central tripartite sash. On either side, 2 windows on each floor. To right, single storey balustraded conservatory with rusticated pilasters and central French window flanked by single windows, all round-headed and with side and top lights. Right return has a single window. East front has to right a single storey ballroom, heavily rusticated, with a blind opening and 3 windows. To left, a porte cochere with rusticated pilasters and balustrade topped with figures. Unglazed round-headed traceried window to front and similar tracery in the heads of the side openings. Panelled 2-leaf doors with fanlight and surround with wreath and swags. INTERIOR has a pilastered central hall with a branching stone staircase and iron balusters. Granite fireplace with overmantel at the foot of the stairs. Arcaded landing with modillion cornice and top lit coved ceiling. Southern ground floor rooms have enriched modillion cornices. Central one has plaster panelled walls and panelled coved ceiling with paintings and 4 chandeliers. Elaborate marble, brass and tile fireplace. Western room has coved ceiling, eastern room an enriched cross beam ceiling. Ballroom has enriched modillion cornice and cross beam ceiling with coffered panels and 3 glazed domes. Freestanding cast-iron stove with marble surround. Glazed double door with fanlight and mirror sidelights. Triptych form organ case at opposite end. Blind arcaded entrance hall has moulded cornices and coffered ceiling. SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: outside, a panelled terrace wall with shaped coping bordering the south and west fronts. Shaped projection to south, and steps at east and west ends. Approx 150m long. Sir John Brown was one of the leading steel manufacturers in C19 Sheffield.
