CANAL WHARF (North side (off)) Crane on east side of Leeds and Liverpool Canal Basin

Crane. Mid C19. Cast-iron, hexagonal concrete plinth. HISTORICAL NOTE: although the importance of the canal declined with the advent of the railways the canal wharf here remained an important stone depot. Arthur Speight founded a company c1830 and in 1893 David Speight advertised himself as: 'David Speight, Stone Merchant, Pavior, Contractor, etc... Large stone wharves for stock, stables, plant and offices. Best known is Bolton Wood stone, 70-100 hands employed'.
