Formerly known as: Upper Wortley Board School ASHLEY ROAD Upper Wortley. Board school, now front range of primary school. 1876. By Richard L Adams. Red brick, stone details, slate roof. H-plan, central hall, 5 bays, the end bays are projecting gabled wings with 'Boys' and 'Girls' entrances set back on left and right; central gabled hall bay projects slightly. Gothic Revival style. Single and 2 storeys. Cusped lights to mullioned windows, quatrefoil lights above, buttresses, coped gables and large moulded ridge stacks. Entrances have pilastered jambs, deep carved stone lintels with trefoil recess and flower motif. INTERIOR: the central 5-bay hall has a fireplace at the centre of each side; panelled doors from hall: 2 to left, 1 to right; corridors partitioned from classrooms by glazed wooden screens; a straight flight of stairs opposite girls' entrance, right. Richard Adams was School Board architect from 1873-1886 and designed 35 schools.
