SE2932 SWEET STREET, Holbeck 714-1/42/855 (North side (off)) Former Marshall Mills Schoolroom

GV II

School, now industrial unit. Probably 1822. For John Marshall's flax mill. Brown brick, rendered on 3 sides, hipped slate roof. 2 storeys, 3 first-floor windows to south side, 5 (1 blocked) to north, rubbed brick flat arches. Probably original blocked doorway north side, right. INTERIOR: not inspected. Important as a survival of a mill school established for the employees of Marshall Mills (qv), over 500 of whom were under 13 by 1840, out of a total workforce of 2,600. The building was accommodated in the plan of the Temple Mill, Marshall Street (qv), the west wall of which was realigned to follow the line of the east end and rear yard of the school.
