GV II

Large house. c1835, altered C20. Stuccoed, low-pitched slate roof with wide bracketed eaves. 2 storeys, 3 bays, wide centre semicircular projection with 3-light window. C20 casements. Central glazed door with flanking windows. Stuccoed chimneys with cornices. INTERIOR: not inspected. One of the row of 3 houses built in New Leeds on land sold by Earl Cowper for villas outside the town centre. The speculation was unsuccessful and only a small number of plots was built on by 1847; the failure of the venture contributed to Sir Walter Scott's insolvency. Included for group value.
