House. 1839, altered C20. For Joseph Matthew. Coursed stone, slate hipped roof. 2 storeys, 3 windows. Central stone doorway with pilasters and entablature. Sashes with glazing bars, plain sills and lintels, continuous 1st-floor sill band. Bracketed eaves, large square stacks left and right, behind ridge. C20 added single-storey range left. INTERIOR: not inspected. Joseph Matthew was the first occupier of 'Hill Ridge House'; he was a brass founder and axel maker of Camp Road, his works was in Little Neville Street. The house is now the residence of the Vice-Chancellor of Leeds University. (Douglas, J (Victorian Society) pers. comm.).
