SE24SE BACK CHURCH LANE, Adel 714-1/2/465 (South side (off)) 19/10/51 Parish Hall (Formerly Listed as: BACK CHURCH LANE, Adel (South side (off)) Stables immediately north of Adel Rectory)

Stables and coach house, now parish hall. c1766, possibly altered c1819. Coursed squared gritstone, ashlar details, stone slate roofs. Tall 3-storey pedimented central block with segmental arch of edge-tooled voussoirs, square window above, Diocletian window in pediment with sill band carried around eaves on returns. Flanking lower wings set back slightly with elliptical window in each; moulded eaves band, hipped roofs. C20 alterations include inserted windows flanking archway which has glazed doors, and stone additions to rear. INTERIOR: not inspected. The remaining part of an extensive group of service buildings grouped around the yard to rear of Adel Rectory, now Ashling and Ashling Cottage (qv) and built c1766 for Sandford Hardcastle; possibly altered or rebuilt c1819. (Cole, D: Rectors, Squires and Stewards... in Adel and Cookridge. ?1985).
