Pair of houses, with area railings attached at front; now hostel and offices. c1840. Possibly by GT Andrews. MATERIALS: mottled brick, in Flemish bond at front, English garden wall bond at rear, with giant pilasters in contrasting grey-white brick to both fronts; painted stone dressings at front, red brick at rear; painted timber doorcases. Slate roof with brick stacks at each end. EXTERIOR: basement and 2 storeys, with attics to the two centre bays. 8 bays, arranged 3:2:3, the two centre bays projecting beneath pediment with overhanging bracketed eaves on giant pilasters with moulded imposts. On each side of central projection is a doorcase of antae with moulded imposts and projecting cornice, and front door of 4 sunk panels, with divided overlight, between side lights. Basement and ground floor window of central projection is 3-light canted bay with 4-pane sashes, beneath bold cornice. Other windows are 12-pane sashes, some with original slender glazing bars, beneath flat arches of brick. Middle window to right of first floor is blind. Ground floor bay window has raised sill band, returned at each end; the outer windows have painted stone sills. Raised sill band beneath first floor windows. Raised attic band across centre bays. Rear: basement and 2 storeys, with attics to the two centre bays: 6 bays, arranged 2:2:2, the two centre bays gabled and projecting as on main front. To the right of the centre projection is a plain door with overlight, approached by a flight of steps with slender railings and shaped handrail. Other details repeat those of main front. Left and right returns: extruded chimney flues join at first floor level to form tall round arch. INTERIOR: open string staircase, cantilevered from first floor, rises from ground to second floor, around circular well lit by skylight; it has turned bobbin balusters and serpentine moulded handrail, wreathed at foot around turned newel on shaped curtail step. Winder stair of stone leads to basement. Basement: fireplace with pilaster jambs and moulded imposts survives in kitchen; also panelled shutters. Ground floor: front room to left, original fireplace, panelled shutters and glass-fronted cupboard survive. First floor: front room to left (subdivided), plain marble fireplace with console cornice shelf; moulded cornice. Front room to right, plain fireplace with console cornice shelf; moulded cornice. Rear room to right, plain fireplace; moulded cornice.

Second floor: moulded cornice beneath stairwell skylight. Some doors of 6 raised and fielded panels, some of 4 sunk panels. Three rooms retain original fireplaces. In front room to left, corner cupboard with dentil cornice and doors of 4 raised and fielded panels, fitted with scrolled painted metal hooks. SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: railings and standards are turned with pointed finials, and raised on low brick plinth with stone coping.
