House, now flats. c1830; extension added c1905; converted to flats 1956-8. MATERIALS: orange-grey brick in Flemish bond on stone plinth; stone dressings and window arches of orange rubbed and gauged brick; deeply coved eaves cornice beneath widely projecting bracketed eaves; shallow hipped roof of slate with brick stacks. EXTERIOR: 2-storey 5-bay front; left and right of centre bay are semicircular bows with 2 windows on each floor. In the centre, entrance has been converted to glazed double doors between narrow 8-pane sash windows set back beneath trabeated loggia with braced carved posts. Each outer bay has 2-leaf French door with divided overlight; bows have full length 12-pane sash windows on ground floor. In centre of first floor one 12-pane sash window is flanked by 8-pane sashes: elsewhere first floor windows are squat 12-pane sashes. Ground floor windows have painted stone sills; on first floor, raised sill band runs full width of house: all windows have flat brick arches. INTERIOR: not inspected. Clifton Lodge was the last residence of Joseph Rowntree who died in 1925.
