Priory Street Wesleyan School extension, now part of community centre (qv); attached railings and gate bounding playground on north-west, south-west and south-east. 1905, with minor late C20 alterations. By T Monkman and Sons. MATERIALS: pink-grey mottled brick in English garden-wall bond, with banding and dressings of orange-red brick; slate roof with gabled louvres, and projecting boarded eaves returned at each end to form bases to gable end bargeboards; external brick cornice stacks banded in contrasting brick. Cast-iron gate and railings, part on brick wall with flat stone coping, part on chamfered stone plinth, with piers of brick and ashlar. EXTERIOR: playground front: 2 storeys, 11 unequal bays. On ground floor, left end bays separated by dwarf pilaster buttresses; end bay altered to form entrance with C20 glazed doors, the others having tall windows. Similar window to right of centre beside extruded stack. Centre bay occupied by small sash window beneath cross-glazed oculus. On first floor, 9 windows, 6 shorter windows are interspersed with 3 tall windows over aprons of contrasting brick which break roof line as flat half-dormers. Pivoting windows have small-pane glazing, painted stone sills and flat arches of gauged brick. South-east front: gabled wings of 2 storeys with attics project between 1-storey end blocks and linked by 1-storey centre block; irregular fenestration. Entrances in wings retain original half-glazed and panelled double doors beneath lintels, left one inscribed 'GIRLS', right one 'BOYS', and moulded and shaped flat hoods. Attic windows are lunettes with 6-pane centre lights and stone sills, beneath keyed semicircular arches of gauged brick. Priory Street front: three windows on ground floor, centre one altered to C20 glazed doors, beneath flat arches of gauged brick, centre one with stepped keyblock. Above, band of contrasting diapered brick. In attic, cross-glazed oculus in keyed surround of gauged brick. INTERIOR: not inspected. SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: railings to north-west on low brick wall extending from square section terminal pier to north with ashlar necking, moulded cornice and flat cap; railings and standards are turned with halberd finials. Railings and foot gate to south-west, returning on south-east, on chamfered stone plinth between square section piers on high plinths, with moulded cornices and cross-pedimented caps. Turned
