House. Early C18 incorporating remains of C15 house; garden front altered in mid C19, raised c1900; wing added c1900: other later alteration and subdivision. MATERIALS: front of orange-brown brick in Flemish bond on chamfered stone plinth; painted chamfered stone quoins, timber eaves cornice and doorcase: garden front of squared coursed magnesian limestone, raised in orange-red brick in English garden-wall bond; wing of orange-red brick in English garden-wall bond. Slate roofs with brick and stone copings and brick stacks; two box dormers with 2x2-pane Yorkshire sashes to main front. EXTERIOR: 2 storeys and attic; 5-bay front; wing of 2 storeys and attic to left, at right angles; 1 gabled bay. Front door of 6 raised and fielded panels beneath bordered overlight in left of centre bay of main front, in doorcase of fluted pilasters and frieze, dentilled and moulded cornice on beaded elongated consoles. All windows are 12-pane sashes, those on first floor taller, with flat arches of gauged brick; ground floor windows have renewed sills, those on first floor painted stone sills. Painted stone raised first floor band. Dentilled and modillioned eaves cornice. Wing has garage door on ground floor and unequal 4-pane sash windows on floors above, attic one in gabled roof. Rear: 2 storeys and gabled attics; 5 bays, two to right tied beneath single shaped gable. Projecting centre bay has glazed door of two round-headed lights. To left is 2-storey canted bay with round-arched multi light windows on both floors, and clerestory of bordered lights on ground floor. To right of door is later square bay with four 1-pane round headed sash windows. Other small round-headed windows on ground floor. Remaining first floor and attic windows are unequal 4-pane sashes. INTERIOR: not inspected: RCHM record C15 carved fireplace arch on ground floor; room with C16 moulded beams, three walls lined with early C17 wainscot and C18 fireplace with overmantel panel. Re-used fittings reset elsewhere. (City of York: RCHME: The Central Area: HMSO: 1981-: 201).
