Coach house, garage and attached yard gateway; now workshop and store. Coach house c1850; garage early C20. Coach house by JB and W Atkinson for CH Elsey. MATERIALS: coach house of orange-grey brick in English garden-wall bond and cast-iron columns; slate hipped roof overhanging on shaped brackets has brick stacks with stone cornices. Garage of red brick in English garden-wall bond and timber boarding; roof of slate and glass with repairs in other materials. EXTERIOR: yard front: 2 storeys, 7 bays. Three centre bays on ground floor are recessed behind flat timber lintel carried on two cast-iron columns. Behind are 3 doors; to left, original wide 6-panel stable door; in centre, replacement 6-panel door with overlight; to right, wide 4-panel door: between are unequal 12-pane windows. In returns beneath colonnade are narrow 4-panel doors. Left end obscured by added garage covering original 4-panel door with 8-pane overlight. Garage has pitched roof and 4-leaf sliding timber doors with glazed lights. Right end altered to glazed board sliding door with timber lintel. First floor has one 12-pane sash window in centre, four 16-pane sash windows in centre, small 1-pane sash at right end. All openings except central door have flat arches of rubbed brick; windows have painted stone sills. Rear to Mill Mount Lane: on ground floor there are three slit vents with iron grilles, stone sills and lintels; on each side are 16-pane sash windows. First floor windows are 9-pane light to left, 16-pane sash in centre and two 12-pane sashes at right end: all have painted stone sills and flat brick arches. INTERIOR: tack room to right of stairs retains board panelling, wooden harness pegs and plain fireplace. Garage at right end has pit sunk in floor. SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: stableyard gateway: gate piers are approximately 6 metres high with moulded stone caps, pilasters with stone imposts and volutes at the head. Board gates are replacements.
