GV II
Probate Registry, now government offices. Dated 1885. By H Tanner. Ashlar and rusticated stone; plain tile roof with terracotta cresting, terracotta and stone finials, and stone stacks. EXTERIOR: 2-storeys and attics; 3-bay front, outer bays gabled, left one with crocketed finial, right one with plain bargeboards. In left bay, gabled doorcase flanked by dwarf buttresses with offsets contains segment-headed double doors in 2-centred arch on jamb shafts with bell capitals: tympanum pierced by overlight of 3 stepped lights beneath carved armorial shield. Above doorcase, single pane sash window. To left of doorcase, ground floor has paired 1-pane sashes; first floor one 3-light mullioned and transomed window; second floor one 3-light window with colonnette mullions with bell capitals, flat hoodmould with foliate stops and segmental relieving arch. Gable apex filled with blind tracery. At left corner is a canted oriel window on rectangular pier with stiff-leaf necking, band of blind quatrefoils and 1-pane mullioned and transomed sashes. Centre bay has 2-storey canted bay window with mullioned and transomed 1-pane sashes on both floors: 3-light window in half-hipped dormer. Right bay has paired 3-light mullioned and double transomed windows on ground floor and two pairs of sash windows on first floor. Gable filled with planted framing. Left return: 2-storey 2-bay return front with 3-storey cross-gabled bay to left, 2-storey flat roofed bay further left. Far left bay has board door with overlight in chamfered opening with 2-centred head beneath hoodmould on leaf stops: above is 1-pane sash window. Gabled bay has mullioned and transomed windows, of 5 lights on ground floor, 3 lights on first floor: second floor has paired 1-pane sashes with colonnette mullion with bell capital and flat hoodmould: slit vent in gable, and crocketed finial. Return wall has 2 levels of paired 1-pane sash windows between ground and first floors; 3-light mullioned and transomed window on first floor. To right is external stack with offsets and shield of City arms sunk in chamfered surround beneath stepped hoodmould. All openings are quoined and mullions and transoms chamfered. Moulded strings encircle rainwater goods and extend around building at ground and first floor sill level; over first floor windows continuing as eaves string over left end bay; below second floor windows, forming parapet coping to far left bay. INTERIOR: not inspected.
