Two houses. 1865. Brick with painted stone or stucco dressings. Slate roof. EXTERIOR: 3 storeys plus attics and basements. Each house 2 bays. The 1st and 2nd floor windows are glazing bar sashes, except those to the 2nd floor of No.21, which are casements. There is a 1st floor sill band. On the ground floor there are canted bay windows set on projecting brick panels. They are sashed, have pilasters at the angles, and have moulded straight heads to the lights. Their brick bases contain cellar windows which have glazing bar sashes and rough brick arches. No.21 has a wide flat-roofed attic dormer. Both houses have doorways at the right with pilaster doorcases which have raised shallow segmental arches and cornices. The doors are recessed. No.20 has a 4-panel door, and an overlight with segmental top. No.21 has a 6-panel door and a rectangular overlight. Both houses have elaborate shaped brackets supporting a gutter cornice. Chimneys to right and between houses. No.21 has an axial ridge stack. INTERIOR: not inspected. SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: the attached railings have spear head finials and are set on low brick walls with stone copings. The gates are also of iron, with iron gateposts which have ball finials. Nos 1-22 Bootham Terrace form an unusually complete row of speculatively built terraced houses, constructed between 1860 and 1870 to an interesting variety of different designs.
