GV II

Pair of houses. 1912-1913. Barry Parker and Raymond Unwin. Brick in Flemish bond with red brick and tile dressings; painted pebbledash to bays and oversailing gable heads. Hipped roof of tile with swept, boxed eaves. One-window range to setback ranges at outer corners. Two-window range to projecting centre about party wall; bilaterally symmetrical with entrances in outer ranges, each set within round-arched recessed porch; the arch turned in tile; to the side of each entrance a shallow niche with trapezoidal head filled with: casement in the same form. Each centre window range with narrow canted bay finishing in oversailing gable head with broad eaves to bay returns; weathering to first-floor bay window; decorative flashing to first-floor sill. The proportional relationships among the bay, its oversailing hamper and the brick range from which it projects are highly ,expressionistic and distinguish this pair from similar designs in Corringham Road and elsewhere. Axial ridge stack to party wall; chimney breast to returns, that to left has two-window range with hipped half dormer and one round window to ground floor, near the front corner. Part of a series of distinguished Parker and Unwin designs, though and listed for the intrinsic value of the design as well as for the group which it forms with, among others, Nos. 81-87 and 93-99 odd (q.v.) Corringham Road.
