HIGH STREET 1. 1594 (East Side) No 47 (Close Gate) SU 1429 NW 3/88 28.2.52. II* GV 2, Access through carriageway in No 49 the High Street qv. Mid C18. 3 storey. Brick with plain lst floor string, moulded 2nd floor string, chamfered brick quoins, and wide flat eaves with pairs of cut brackets. Hipped old tile roof. 6 windows (2 false on 2nd floor) to upper floor. 6-Panel central door in plain frame with doric doorcase, heavy scroll bracketed frieze and moulded pediment. Early Cl9 wrought iron lamp on bracket over door. 4 ground floor windows (spacing altered) and modern half octagon bay to right hand spoiling symmetry of design. Small service door left hand and 2-storey stable extension with tile hung upper part and one window. Interior: the hall has a fine screen of 3 bays with Ionic pilasters applied to 4 centred arcading with keystones. Closed string staircase with twisted balusters, panelled newels. Fine drawing room, fully panelled above skirting and dado cornice cove enriched with anthemion and palmette motifs. Good fireplace mirror above with fruit carving to frame and broken pediment over with urn and carved garlands. Elaborate rococo stucco work ceiling with garlands swags, shells and shaped centre panel. Pedimented doorcase.
Nos 37 to 51 (odd) form a group with Nos 50 to 58 (even) & No 64.
