Farmhouse. Late C18 north front probably for Robert Holgate, with rear wing of C17 or earlier origins raised to 2 storeys in C19. Early section in roughly-coursed limestone rubble, faced on east side in red brick in Flemish Bond with limestone ashlar dressings. Later sections in squared limestone with ashlar and red brick dressings. Brick stacks. Pantile roofs. T-shaped on plan: central entrance hall front with rear wing. 2 storeys, 3 bays; symmetrical. Ashlar quoins. Doorcase with architrave, fluted frieze and carved consoles supporting a dentilled pediment. 6 fielded-panel door beneath moulded cornice and 3-pane overlight in panelled reveal. Phoenix Insurance Company plaque above. C19 4-pane sashes in flush wood frames with projecting sills and segmental rubbed brick arches; first floor central window has margin lights. Brick eaves. Hipped roof. Twin stacks. Left return: rear wing probably formed part of earlier east front: brick quoins to first floor, rubble plinth with brick and tile string course. Stone steps to plank door; blocked 4-light ashlar double-chamfered mullioned cellar window to right with a 16-pane sash above, 3-light ashlar ovolo- mullioned window in chamfered reveal to left with an 8-pane sliding sash above. Cyma-moulded ashlar string course and 2 first floor 16-pane sashes in segmental-arched brick surrounds. Stone-coped gable with shaped kneelers to C18 build to right, brick-edged stone-coped gable to left. Axial stack. Right return: rear wing has scattered fenestration: three 2-light and one large 3-light ashlar ovolo-mullioned windows in chamfered reveals, and one smaller 3-light with mullions missing. Interior: C18 section contains open well main staircase with ramped and wreathed handrail, and open well closed- string back stairs with moulded handrail, both with column-on-vase balusters with square knops; moulded stairhall ceiling with central fan design; carved wood chimneypiece with contemporary decorated iron grate to ground floor right. Rear wing contains ovolo-moulded ceiling beam with cyma stops in former back kitchen; fragmentary leaded casement in blocked cellar window. Adjoining range to rear of no special interest.
