6/137 Church of St. Peter 27.1.1967 - II

Church, 1849-50, by J.E. Gregan (Pevsner). Sandstone, with slate roof. West tower with spire, nave with north and south aisles, chancel with side offices. In Early English style. Three-stage tower has angle buttresses, moulded arched west doorway, 2-light window above, set-back 3rd stage with 2-light belfry openings in each side, a Lombard frieze to the parapet, pinnacles on the corners, and broached spire with lucarnes on 3 levels. Six-bay nave and aisles; gabled porch to 2nd bay of south side has moulded arched doorway with hoodmould; aisles have buttresses and 2-light plate-traceried windows, nave has pilaster strips and alternately quatrefoil and cinquefoil clerestory windows, and both have dentils at the eaves; but 1st bay of south aisle (baptistry) has a 3-light window. East window of 3 lights with multifoils in the head. Interior: nave arcade of short octagonal columns with moulded caps supporting double-chamfered 2-centred arches; similar chancel arch with shafts; arch-braced kingpost roof supported by hammerbeams; octagonal marble font with shafted pedestal, carved panels, ornately carved wooden cover; organ in tower arch.
