Details
TQ 53 37 SPELDHURST GROOMBRIDGE HILL (west side), OLD GROOMBRIDGE 16/516 Fountain Cottages 11.1.90 GV II
Pair of small cottages. C18 or early C19. Timber-framed on Flemish bond red brick footings with burnt headers. Most is hung with peg-tile and some of the outshots are weatherboarded. Brick stack with brick chimneyshaft; peg-tile roof.
Plan: Pair of small labourer's cottages on the hillside facing south east towards Groombridge Place (q.v.). Each has a mirror plan of the other. One- room plan with rear lateral stack serving corner diagonal fireplaces. Entrance through lean-to outshots each end and services in C20 lean-to outshots to rear.
Main block is 2 storeys with attics in the roofspace.
Exterior: 2-window front of timber casements containing rectangular panes of leaded glass. Similar windows around the other sides although some contain diamond panes. The windows are old, mostly C19, and some maybe original. Main roof is gable-ended. Doorways in end outshots are C20 plank doors.
Interiors: Have plain carpentry detail where exposed. Roof was not available for inspection at the time of this survey.
This attractive pair of small cottages on Groombridge Hill form part of a good group of varied listed buildings above Old Groombridge village.
