Details

TQ 53 37 SPELDHURST GROOMBRIDGE HILL (west side), OLD GROOMBRIDGE 16/519 Gates, gate piers and flanking walls to The Cottage

GV II

Gate piers, gates and boundary walls. Circa 1835. Boundary walls are also revetting the terraced garden of The Cottage (q.v.). They are battered and built of rock-faced coursed sandstone. Each side of the recessed entrance to The Cottage there are square section piers of sandstone ashlar with bands around the top. From these taller walls of coursed sandstone are canted inwards to gate piers (taller verisons of the other piers). These contain probably original wrought iron double gates which include friezes of anthemion ornament.

These walls and gates form part of a good group of listed buildings on Groombridge Hill, all close to Groombridge Place (q.v.) and Old Groombridge village.
