(North side) Shotley Bridge 5/72 (inset) Messenger House

GV II

House. Early C19. Coursed squared sandstone with ashlar dressings and quoins; Welsh slate roof with ashlar and yellow brick chimneys. 3 storeys, 3 bays. Central flushed door and overlight in plain stone surround; windows, the second floor left blind, have flat stone lintels and projecting stone sills; sashes with glazing bars to those on ground floor and at left of first floor, others boarded up. Hipped roof has tall front ashlar chimney with plinth and cornice; left yellow brick chimney. Right return 2 storeys, 4 bays, on higher ground: steps up to boarded door and overlight in plain stone surround; most windows sashes with glazing bars; foot scraper on steps. Historical note: named after the Reverend John Messenger who lived there. He was minister of St. John's Church 1837-41. Empty and derelict at time of survey.
