House. 1896-7. Designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens for Gertrude Jekyll, built by Thomas Underwood. Coursed Bargate stone blocks with some half-timbering and plain tiled roofs swept out to eaves, hipped with gablets on the main range. Half-H shaped plan with projecting hipped wing to left of centre to form U-shaped smaller entrance court. Two storeys with prominent brick multiple stacks, all on moulded plinths with corbelled tops and some placed diagonally. Elevation facing drive:- wall to left with breathers under tile-on-edge lintels at eaves. Round arched door giving access to corridor with tile-on-edge bands to arch. Four wood-framed leaded casement windows to first floor, five windows below, the outer ones with flat tile-on-edge lintels, the centre two with cambered heads. Oversailing gable to left. Pentice-catslide to right. Ribbed door with original door fittings to left at the end of the corridor. Entrance front:- Double hipped range to left with cobbled court between to kitchen range,approached through buttressed walls and wooden gallery over. Half-glazed door and low window on end wall. Gabled wing to right: Jettied half-timbered range between the two wings with ogee bracing and continuous leaded fenestration on the first floor in projecting frames. Door and window, under common segmental head, to gable end of right hand wing. Paved circular area between wings. Right hand return front:- massive stack to left of centre. Two first floor and two ground floor windows. One between-floors, 12-light casement to right. Garden front:- Two gables left and right of centre, each with one first floor and two ground floor windows. Door to left of centre and hipped wing to right. Interior:- 6-bay-gallery across centre of first floor with queen strut roof and panelled walls. Originally in a "wild" garden designed by Gertrude Jekyll with formal court to north and kitchen gardens etc. The garden has been included in the Register of Parks and Gardens of Special Historic Interest in England (Part 40). Grade I.
