POOL POOL BANK NEW ROAD SE 24 NW LS 21 (west side) 1/167 Pool Hall 22.11.1966 - II

Large house, now 5 dwellings. C18, but of various builds, apparently accretions to an originally small house. Mostly coursed squared sandstone with wing of handmade brick; stone slate roofs. Irregular T-shaped plan, of which the earliest part appears to be the stem (of the T). Two storeys, with attic in addition; the principal element, on an east-west axis facing south, is a single-depth 2-storey house of 3 bays, symmetrical; central doorway with moulded architrave and rectangular overlight, protected by a semicircular Tuscan porch with moulded cornice; two 12-pane sashes at ground floor and above, all with raised plain surrounds; added bay to the left, with one similar window on each floor; embattled parapet of this build carried across the whole facade; corniced chimneys to the gables of the original house, corniced ridge chimney to the addition; copings to both gables. (Partly overlapping the added bay, a long south wing at right angles: see below). The left gable wall of the main range, treated as an entrance front of 2½ storeys and 2 bays, symmetrical; has a plinth, 1st floor band, and pedimented gable; central doorway with shouldered architrave 2 coupled 12-pane sashes on each floor, and a Venetian attic window, all with raised plain surrounds; and a moulded gable coping. To the left of this and set back slightly, another service wing, which is of less interest, but has a Venetian window at 1st floor of the gable wall, and gable coping with kneelers and finials. The south wing (mentioned above) formerly stables or coach-house, altered at various periods, now a dwelling, of coursed sandstone on the west side and hand-made brick on the east side finished with sandstone parapet, has inter-alia 2 former segmental-headed wagon doorways in the west side, and a mono-pitched roof.
