HORSFORTH LOW LANE SE 23 NW LS 18 (west side, off) 8/138 Church of St. James 19.10.1962 - II
Church. 1847-8, by C. W. Burleigh of Leeds. Coursed sandstone, slate roof. Nave with north and south aisles under parallel roofs, chancel. Early English style. Buttressed 5-bay aisles have 2-centred arched windows all of 2 cusped lights with trefoils or quatrefoils in the heads and all under hoodmoulds with figured stops; north aisle has gabled single-storey porch to 2nd bay, with deeply-moulded 2-centred-arched doorway under a hoodmould with blank-shield stops; south aisle has a triangular porch incorporated with buttress between 4th and 5th bays of south aisle. West gable wall has a low 2-centred-arched west doorway moulded in 2 orders under a hoodmould with figured stops, a stepped drip-mould, and a large west window of 4 cusped lights) under a hoodmould with figured stops; and a gable bellcote; west ends of aisles have 3-light windows with multifoil tracery. Apex crosses on all gables. Two-bay chancel in similar style, with 3-light traceried east window.
Interior: 5-bay aisle arcades of octagonal columns, double-chamfered arches.
