GV II
Lime kilns. Circa late C18/early C19. Shale rubble with dressed stone nearly round arches and vaults. Built into slope at rear (north) with main doorway to south and further smaller entrance to each side wall. Overall rectangle with 2 kilns. Very tall main doorway leads into barrel vaulted passage to central working area with access to ½ dome vault at either side from which lime was removed when burnt. To the south are remains of masonry which supported an overhead gantry which was used to off load limestone or coal from barges or small boats onto the working platform over the kilns. The limekilns are first mentioned in 1899, when they were already disused, and must predate the bridge and turnpike road of 1828. Information from THE NORWAY HOTEL, PERRANWHARF.
