13/355 Carthouse approx 40m west of Chalket Farmhouse

GV II

Carthouse, now used as a garage. C17, much rebuilt in the C19. Stretcher bond red brick on footing of large coursed blocks of sandstone; peg-tile roof.

Plan: Carthouse on a rough north south axis. It is now used as a garage and has a large doorway in the north end; a smaller doorway is blocked in the south end.

Exterior: Long sides are 3 bays defined by brick piers, the walls between slightly recessed. The roof is half-hipped to north and that end is weatherboarded and contains a metal C20 pivoting garage door. The roof is hipped to south and south end includes 2 timber uprights which look as though they were once doorway jambs. A doorway this end would have been raised on top of the footings to enable loading directly from carts.

Interior: 3 bays. The northern truss is C17; a tie-beam truss with clasped side purlins and queen struts. The southern truss is similar but probably a C19 copy.

This cartshed is an attractive building belonging to nearby Chalket Farmhouse (q.v.).
