GV II

Town hall extension. Built 1938-9 by E Cowles Voysey, assisted by John Ashton and John
Brandon Jones, in Neo-Georgian style. Concrete frame clad with brown brick in Flemish bond
with Portland stone dressings. Hipped steeply pitched roof of Westmorland slate with 2 large
brick stacks at angle of the wings. Two storeys; 3:11:3 windows. Comprises centre and 2
projecting wings of 3 bays. Coved stone eaves cornice. Tall 1st floor sashes have 15 panes.
Ground floor sashes are 12 pane, all with cambered heads. Deep stone plinth. Central window
has stone architrave with carved shield and 2 console brackets above and shell moulding to foot.
Doorcase has stone surround with floral carving keystone and motto "DUM CRESCO
SPERO". Four panelled double doors. steps are flanked by 2 stone shell-shaped planters and
built-in flower beds. Lead rainwater heads with letter B for Bromley. Wings have 12-pane
sashes on each floor and curved stone flower beds in setback angles. Tweedy Road elevation
is curved and has 2 storeys; 9 windows. It is connected to the earlier Town Hall building of
1906 by a 2 storey pedestrian walkway. Court Street elevation is of 2 storeys; 5 windows and
has a doorcase with stone architraves. Interior has impressive partially top lit Imperial staircase
of concrete with metal scrolled handrails, dominated by 4 giant fluted concrete columns clad
in green marble. Walls covered in acoustic plaster. Panel flanking entrance records the names
of the mayors of Bromley. First floor has 2 panelled wooden doors divided by a pilaster leading
to the suite of mayoral chamber, committee and robing rooms and principal offices. All retain
their original panelling, fireplaces and original lavatory fittings. Original doors throughout.
