Details

HINDERCLAY THORPE STREET (NORTH WEST TM 07 NW SIDE) 1/53 Walnut Tree Farm House - and Walnut Tree Cottage - II House, now 2 dwellings. Early C16, stacks and floor inserted and extended mid C17, altered and extended C20. Timber frame, plastered. Thatched roof, originally half hipped at both ends. Originally 4 bays with a small 2 bay open hall and storeyed end bays, stacks inserted in hall lower bay and at lower end with an added service bay. 1 storey and attic. Entrances in added bay to left and into upper hall bay to right, C20 casements. 3 gabled dormers, that to right of 3-lights, part opening with glazing bars. Ridge stacks to right of centre and axial at original left end, later ridge stack inserted in upper bay. Original half hip to right end with a lean-to outshut. Left end 2-light glazing bar attic casement. To rear a lean-to outshut. Interior: hall has open truss arched braces springing below inserted floor with stop chamfered side girts, axial binding beam and fireplace bressumer; original frame is of small scantling with straight arched braces in walling, original 6 light diamond mullioned window openings in hall upper bay, plain tie beam in open truss, coupled rafter roof with some blackening; original lower bay much altered with a C17 ogee stop chamfered axial binding beam. C20 extension to left is not of special interest.
