Number 5 (odd)
II
House. Circa C16; remodelled in circa early C17 and C19; Timber-framed, roughcast. Clay
plain tile roof with gabled ends. Roughcast gable-end stacks. PLAN: 2-room plan of two
framed bays; the larger right-hand bay probably originally an open hall, the left bay of two
storeys and with framed partition between the two bays; originally a third bay on the
right-hand end. In circa early C17 a floor was inserted into the hall creating a chamber above;
the hall stack might have been built before the floor was inserted. Divided into two cottages in
C19, when a brick wall was built across the left side of the hall; outshut on the right [N.W.]
end is a C19 addition.
EXTERIOR: 1-storey and attic. Almost symmetrical 2-window north-east front. Small
C19 2-light casements with leaded panes, the attic casements in small gabled
dormers. Plank doors to left and right of-centre with very small 2-light window between.
Single storey outshut on the right-hand end built around gable-end stack. At the rear there are
small casements, central doorway and large C20 conservatory to left.
INTERIOR: Right-hand
room [hall] has chamfered axial beam with hollow step stops at one end, deeply-chamfered
joists with similar stops and large fireplace with roughly chamfered timber lintel; doorway to
outshut on right with cranked head. Smaller left-hand room has roughly chamfered axial beam
and large joists; doorway in timber-framed partition with cambered head. Timber frame
exposed in attic chambers, including wall plates and wall framing with curved tension-braces,
jowled posts, curved braces to slightly cambered tie beams, queen posts and wind braces; the
apex of the roof is ceiled and inaccessible.
