Ash Tree Cottage
II
House. C17, extended in circa late C17 or C18 and with circa
C20 addition. Timber-framed with rendered panels, rebuilt in
brick and rendered on the ground floor. Clay plain tile roofs
with gabled ends to front and rear. Brick axial stack. PLAN:
C17 timber-framed range of one bay, end on to the road, and
with a circa late C17 or C18 timber-framed range at the rear
of similar size, and what appears to be a C20 small extension
on the right [north] side with a porch at the front. The front
room is heated from an axial stack at the back, at the junction
of the two ranges. EXTERIOR: 2 storeys. 2-bay gabled front, the
larger left gable is the original C17 house and has exposed
corner-posts and 2 C20 casements on the ground floor and a
large C20 3-light casement on the first floor. Timber-framing
exposed on the left [south] return where there is a small
single-light window under the eaves. The smaller gable on the
right of the front is circa C20 extension and has a gabled
porch with an elliptical arch. The rear has rendered gable and
C20 casements. INTERIOR: Front room has chamfered axial beam
with cyma stops at front end, exposed unchamfered joists and
rebuilt brick fireplace with chamfered timber lintel with long
cyma stops. Rear room has chamfered cross-beam without steps.
On first floor both front and back ranges have jowled posts and
exposed wall-framing. Roof structure exposed in the front
chamber, tie-beams, collars and clasped purlins, the front
truss with curved braces and studs, the back truss with
queen-posts; wind-braces. The roof over the back range also
appears to be intact.
