COLEBROOKE COLEFORD SS 70 SE 3/110 Forge House 26.8.65 GV II
House. Mid C17 with service extension of 1985. Main house is plastered cob on rubble footings; cob stacks, 1 with c19 brick top, the other disused; thatch roof. C19 2-room plan cottage facing north-west with central through passage containing C19 stairs. Stack in right (south-west) end party wall shared by adjoining Homeleigh (south-west) and disused front lateral stack to left room. At left end is a store recessed from front and to rear is 1985 service extension. 2 storeys. Front has irregular fenestration with a single 4-light casement at right end on ground floor and two 2-light casements on first floor at right end and right of centre. All at C19 with glazing bars. Small blind recess under eaves left of centre. In centre are 2 C19 doors. That to left possibly replacing former window. All ground floor openings and the back of the fireplace have exposed C17 oak lintels, all chamfered with scroll stops. The latter may imply that the stack inserted and blocked a former window. Roof is hipped to left. Interior: right room has a chamfered and scroll stopped crossbeam and rubble fireplace lintel also has remains of similar finish. Fireplace also has Cl9 brick lined oven to left. Left room has plain carpentry detail. Roof of A-frame trusses with pegged lap-jointed collars. A feature difficult to explain is 2 doors through back wall at first floor level. Coleford is a remarkably unspoilt and picturesque hamlet.
