Wragby Lodge, with gateway and screen wails.
(Formerly listed as "Main Lodge of Nostell Priory Wakefield Road (Wragby Lodge)",
GV
II
Pair of lodges, with associated gateways and screen walls. Probably 1777 by
Robert Adam. Sandstone ashlar and wrought iron. Each lodge is a single cell
of square plan and one storey, in classical style, with rusticated quoins, an
impost band carried round the whole, a round-headed recessed arch (facing the
road) containing a round-headed sashed window with radiating glazing bars in
the head; and a low pyramidal roof with a central chimney; plain doorway in
the side wall to the drive; and rear similar to front. Between the lodges, 2
square gatepiers of massive finely-dressed blocks, each with a floral
medallion in an otherwise plain frieze, and a shallow swept cap (formerly
surmounted by a winged sphinx). Double main gates and single side gates, all
of simple spear-railing design with dog bars below and S-shaped passing
braces above. Concave curved screen walls attached to the outer corners of
the lodges.
