The Old Forge

Forge. Probably later C18, altered in C19. Coursed grooved sandstone
blocks, stone slate roof. Rectangular plan. Single storey, 4 bays; 4 square
6-pane fixed windows with stone sills and heads; hipped roof. Left end wall
has an elliptical arched wagon doorway now covered by external sliding doors;
right-hand end has a lean-to extension with a brick chimney at the junction;
rear has a doorway and 3 square 6-pane fixed windows, and an added external
hooping furnace of brick, with a chimney.
Interior: many original features survive, including forge hearth and
quenching trough at east end. Building still in use as a workshop at time of
survey (1986).
