------------------------------------

WITHYHAM LEYSDOWN TQ 53 SW 13/949 Old Riding School II Indoor riding school, later adapted as cattle shed. c1890 in Arts and Crafts style by Percy Ginham, after 1889 Chief Clerk to Richard Norman Shaw who built the main house 'Leyswood' in 1869 (see Item 6/167). Built of brown brick in stretcher bond with hipped slate roof. Interesting composition of central riding school flanked by stabling. Front has central 5-light gabled dormer forming part of clerestory to riding school and central cambered arched equestrian entrance. 4 brick square buttresses. Stabling range continues each side with a slightly lower sloping roof. Side elevations have 6 gabled 3-light dormers forming clerestory to the riding school and lower sloping roof to stabling. 8 fixed casement windows and 9 doors. Internally the building is lit by the clerestory and the roof is carried by a complex system of iron trusses. Boarded ceiling. Some later partitions and remains of feeding units dating from the building's adaptation for cattle are not of special interest.
