3/139 Church of St. Wilfred 14.9.66 II
Parish church. C15, heavily restored in 1890 by Ewan Christian. Green sandstone rubble blocks, limestone ashlar dressings. Plain tiled roofs with overhanging eaves, bargeboards and wrought iron cross finials; tall ashlar polygonal stack to north-east with tiny pointed openings; bell supported by timberframe hung in west gable. Nave with south porch, chancel with north vestry. West end with pointed C19 window with 3 pointed, cusped lights and hood mould. North side of nave with 2 C19 rectangular windows, that to right of 2 lights, that to left of 3 lights, all with cusped ogee shaped heads. North side of C19 vestry with slit light; east side with doorway with plank door. East end of chancel with diagonal, single stage buttresses and Cl9 pointed window with 3 pointed, cusped lights and hood mould. South side of chancel with rectangular, 3 light window with cusped ogee shaped heads. 3 stage buttress defines nave from chancel. Nave with 2 rectangular windows each with 2 cusped ogee headed lights. Gabled, timberframed C19 porch to west with ornate bargeboard, return walls each with 4 trefoil headed lights, doorway with flattened triangular head and mesh doors. C19 inner doorway with moulded, pointed head, chamfered jambs, hood mould and double plank doors. C19 pointed chancel arch with double chamfered head and inner corbelled order. C19 roofs. C20 pews, pulpit and font. 4late C18 ornate wrought iron hat hooks, each with 2 transoms supporting 4 hooks each, a central vertical shaft and scrollwork.
