Details
The following Buildings shall be added:-
ATHERSTONE COVENTRY CANAL SP 39 NW 2/10002 Cottage with attached lobby, walled yards and wash house at Atherstone Lock No 5 GV II Lock cottage, now pair of cottages. Built for Coventry Canal CO. L C18 or C19 extended in mid C19. Painted brick. Slate roof with gable stack and ridge stack. Rear extension with gable stack. Dentilled cornice and gables. Canal front: 3 bays, 2 storeys. Central doorway with cambered arch to through passage dividing dwellings. To left of doorway a 3-light central opening casement with cambered arch. To right, a smaller 3-light casement followed by a 3-light central opening casement, both with cambered arches. Above, a range of 3, 3- light central opening casements with flat arches. Mid C19 front extension consists of bay to right of ridge stack. Adjoining is a lock-keeper's lobby: mid C19, brindled brick with plain tile roof, ridge stack and gable stack. Doorway with stone lintel and plank door, flanked by single windows with stone lintels and sills and C20 casements. Lobby and cottage both have adjoining mid C19 walls with basket-arched doorways giving into small yards, that to left of cottage with attached wash-house. A rare example of a Canal Co. cottage with surviving yards and outbuildings.
