Lacon Cross
II
Plinth, socket stone and lower part of cross shaft. Medieval. Probably for
the monks of Fountains Abbey. Gritstone. Plinth composed of flat stones
forming a base approximately 1.5 metres square and 20 centimetres high.
Socket stone set into centre of plinth approximately 60 centimetres square
and 40 centimetres high, the top hollowed out to take the cross shaft.
Shaft: square in section with roll mouldings to corners; surviving to
approximate height of 1 metre. The cross was probably a route marker for
travellers crossing Butterton Bridge (qv) from Warsill and the south to
Fountains Abbey (qv).
