Details
WEST ALVINGTON SX 74 SW Linham Barn 5/205 II
Field barn, comprising barn and shippon. Late C181early C19. Roughly coursed slatestone rubble walls with dressed quoins and voussoirs over openings; slate roof with corbelled kneelers and slate copings. Barn has threshing floor to left of centre, with outshut to right; shippon attached further down slope to left with rear outshut. Slate canopy over flat stone arch to threshing bay. Segmental stone arch over small winnowing door to rear. Timber lintel over loft door to right gable, Shippon has plank loft door above segmental-arched door; 2 doorways to rear outshut. Interior: softwood scissor-braced roof to barn, which has grease horn recess to left of entrance and draft-beam pockets above threshing floor; late C19 drive shaft to outshut, formerly used as engine house and now occupied by winnowing machine. A well-crafted and good example of a South Hams field barn.
