WOOLFARDISWORTHY WOOLFARDISWORTHY SS 80 NW 6/298 - The Barton Farmhouse GV II
Farmhouse. Early C16 with later C16 and C17 improvements, renovated circa 1960. Plastered cob on rubble footings; rubble and brick stacks with plastered chimney shafts; slate roof (formerly thatch). 2-room plan house facing east with large stack projecting from left (south) end and axial stack to right room. Central stair turret projecting to rear. Continuous outshots to rear, probably C17 or C18. 2 storeys. Asymmetrical 3-window front of circa 1984 casements with glazing bars. Roughly central door. Gable-ended roof. Plastered chimney shaft of end stack with drip course and coping is probably original. Interior shows quality work of several periods and others are probably hidden. The oldest feature apparent is an early C16 side-pegged jointed cruck with chamfered arch braces, and yoke at apex strengthening the notch for a trenched ridge (Alcock's Type L1). It presumably remains from early C16 hall and is smoke-blackened from an open hearth fire. Central truss is an early C17 side-pegged jointed cruck truss with pegged dovetail lap-jointed collar. The lower sections of left (southern) truss is boxed in but upper part appears to be late C17 with simple pegged lap- jointed collar and at apex principals curve together. Left southern room has 2 early C17 beams, soffit-chamfered with keeled step stops, and it is said that joists between are scratch-moulded. Contemporary fireplace is partly blocked but enough is exposed to show that it is built of volcanic ashlar and its oak lintel is ovolo- moulded with exagerated step stops with large inscribed spirals rising from end of mouldings. Right room has late C17 moulded plaster cornice and blocked fireplace (said to be brick).
