GV II
Theatre. Completed 1895. Timber frame clad in matchboarding with galvanised sheet roof. Classical Roman plan with 3 doors onto proscenium from the rear. Exedra in classical style. One storey. Semi- circular proscenium arch with moulded imposts and extrados to stage, which has painting of classical ruins to backcloth (different from that shown in photograph of 1900): this arch is framed by fluted Corinthian pilasters rising to entablature. One of a series of structures erected from c1880 at Larmer Grounds for General Pitt Rivers, and central to the famous archaeologist's belief that education should be linked to entertainment.
