CLAYDON NORWICH ROAD TM 14 NW 7/103 No.12 and - No 14 (Smilax House) - II

Pair of terraced houses, originally one. A C15 or early C16 crosswing to left, with rebuilt late C16 hall range to right; refronted late C19. 2 storeys. Timber-framed, encased late C19 in red brick, with moulded band at 1st floor and dentil course at eaves. Plaintiled roof (No.14 has pierced ridge tiles). Chimneys of red brick at either end. C19 sash windows; those at ground floor have segmental heads (No.12 has C20 casements in original openings). C19 doorways; above each is a moulded brick pediment and a festoon in terracotta. No.14 has a C19 6-panelled door, No.12 has a C20 4-panelled door. The cross- wing is of 2 bays, probably projecting further rearwards until C19, and originally comprised twin service rooms with a chamber above; the original coupled rafter roof is encapsulated within the C19 roof. In early C17 the service rooms were amalgamated and became a parlour, with a fine plaster ceiling of moulded panels containing motifs of roses, acorns and fleurs-de- lys. Both houses have exposed unmoulded late C16 1st floor structures in the hall range, which was extended to rear and given a 2-span roof in late C19.
