TQ 64 SE BRENCHLEY WINDMILL HILL, BRENCHLEY (westside) 6/194 The View

II

Small house. Probably C18 or earlier origins. Flemish bond brick with blue headers to the ground floor, first floor tile-hung; peg-tile roof; brick stacks.

Plan: Sited on a spur of high ground at the top of Windmill Hill, facing on to the hill. Probably 2 rooms wide with a front door to left of centre. The main range is single depth with a rear right outshut which projects beyond the right end of the house.

Exterior: 2 storeys. Asymmetrical 3-window front. Gable-ended roof, left end stack and axial stack. C18 fielded panel front door to left of centre. 3 ground floor late C19 plate glass sashes, 2-panes with margin glazing. 3 first floor 2-light casements, each just breaking the eaves line with one light above. The right (north) end of the house has a 2-tier bay glazed with late C19 or C20 windows with glazing bars with a French window in the centre of the bay on the ground floor.

Interior: Not inspected.

Although modest in scale and external detail the house occupies an important corner site at the entrance to the village from the north.
