House, originally farmhouse. Circa late C15/early C16. Hall floored in circa
C16/C17 and wing added probably C17. Rendered and painted cob walls, wheatreed
thatched roof, hipped to left and to wing. Brick stacks over end wall left, gable
end right and over external lateral stone breast front. Further lateral projecting
chimney breast or stair turret to east end, rear. 3-room, through passage plan plus
one room wing to front, left. 2 storeys with 1st floor partly in roof space. 3-
window east of south front. Original doorway with thatched hood and old ledged door
between wing left and chimney breast. Circa C17/C18 2-light leaded casement over.
Hall window right of chimney breast similar 4-light leaded casement.Similar 3-light
window over and to left. Deepened opening to ground floor right with C20 French
windows and 12-pane, 2-light casement over. Further small window under eaves above
right side of hall window lights small closet. Thatch eyebrowed over other windows.
Wing has C20 pvc windows. Old ledged door also to rear of through-passage.
Interior retains 3 jointed crucks to 2-bay hall with straight collars morticed into
truss blades and butt or threaded purlins. 2 cruck posts can be seen in ground
floor rooms rising from floor level. Roof space not accessible. Timbers visible
over hall now painted but sample of rye straw retained following recent rethatching
shows smoke-blackening. One trussed blade at lower end, front with section between
curved foot and cruck post removed may have been a full cruck. Hip cruck at lower
end visible in first floor room. 2 oak muntin and plank screens survive at either
end of hall. Doorway removed and widened in screen adjoining passage with chamfered
muntins to passage side only with straight cut stops. Other screen retains Tudor
arched doorway now approached by rear passage. Chamfered side of screen ie towards
hall, now hidden and part of screen removed. Chamfered oak cross beam to hall has
ogee stops. Axial oak beam in room beyond the hall has straight chamfer stops.
Room below passage has plastered ceiling and wing has cross beam with wide chamfers.
Hall. fireplace has chamfered volcanic stone jambs and oak lintel. Room below hall
has large fireplace with brick lined oven to left and deep keeping place accessible
from oak winder stair left of fireplace and with solid oak treads under C20 ones.
