STOCKLEIGH POMEROY THE GREEN, Stockleigh Pomeroy SS80 SE 10/240 - No.1 and No.3 (Hillview Cottage) and No.2 Pleases Row GV II

3 adjoining cottages, probably originally 1 house. Circa early C15, remodelled and extended circa C17 and extended C20 to left and rear. Rendered and painted cob walls, hipped wheat-reed thatched roof with 2 brick axial chimneys, brick shaft over external breast to end, right and over external lateral breast to front with projecting oven. Now 6-room plan plus extensions for bathrooms etc., to rear. Probably originally 3-room-through-passage plan. 2 storeys. Irregular 6-window south-west front. C20 windows except three 12-pane, 2-light casements to first floor, right. Original entrance probably to left of lateral stack, now with window. Present entrances with C20 doors to far left; to right of lateral breast and under 5th 1st floor window with C20 gabled porch. Old rafter ends project beyond cob under eaves. Interior of middle cottage (No.2) part of original hall has splayed fireplace with chamfered oak lintel with runout stops and oven in fireback, right. Roughly chamfered oak axial beam. Stops probably beyond later partitions. Roof structure old but inaccessible. No.3 (Hillview Cottage) at north-west (left) end has chamfered axial ceiling beam with scroll stops and fireplace in end wall with stone rubble jambs and chamfered lintel with scroll stops. Partition plastered over. Roof truss visible in upper room boxed in and roof space inaccessible. No.1 at south-east (right) end; 2 smoke-blackened probably raised crucks, only blades at the rear survive and have massive square set purlins on top of blades and have morticed chamfered arch braces which are tenoned for the collars which are missing. The smoke-blackened rafters also survive. Roof over higher, right-hand end replaced in circa late C17 or early C18, the principals crossed at apices and side-pegged to lap-jointed collars. Hall has chamfered beam with step stops and inserted fireplace with timber lintel with step stops. Inner room has chamfered beam with double scroll stops.
