3/5 Old Church of All Saints 25.5.66 G.V. II*

Church, c.1785, on site of, and probably incorporating remains of medieval church. Dressed sandstone; Lakeland slate roof with stone ridge and gable copings. Churchwarden style. Nave with north transept and north-west vestry, chancel and west tower. 3-stage tower has round-headed south doorway; pointed fixed-light west window with intersecting glazing bars, in middle stage; round-headed bell openings and embattled parapet. 3-bay nave has round-headed windows with small, square, horizontal sashes in lower parts, and intersecting glazing bars. Square fixed-light windows with glazing bars in west end of north wall and in west wall, lighting gallery area and below gallery. Tall rectangular opening high in east end of north wall partly blocked with square light in upper part. Sundial with floating cornice in south wall. Transept has round-headed sash windows with intersecting glazing bars, and end stack. Venetian east window has fixed lights with glazing bars. Round-headed priest's doorway with similar round-headed window to left. North wall of chancel has buttress with offsets. Square iron downpipes and gutterings with ornamental brackets. Interior: plastered walls; ceiling missing; Queen-post roof trusses with diagonal bracing in nave. West gallery on 4 slender, fluted, wood columns, has high panelled front and raked seating. Timber fittings oak grained. 3-decker pulpit with tester has dentil cornice and Vitruvian scroll brattishing. Panelled box pews with doors, in C18 "Prayerbook" liturgical arrangement around pulpit in north side of nave. Names of pew renters on wall panelling. Round-headed chancel arch. Wood communion rails have turned balusters. Transept used as family pew, with partly panelled walls, similar box pews and fireplace in north wall. Good C17 and C18 monuments in north wall of chancel. Painted wood commandment boards and biblical texts on north and east walls of chancel, and east spandrel of chancel arch. Matrix of medieval brass memorial. 3 medieval stone coffins and one carved coffin lid. Outhouse ajoining north side of chancel is not of interest. Disused and dilapidated at time of survey.
